News Release Rt. 66 Chocolatier Fills Niche Market 2/1/09
Missouri Route 66 Association member Marcia Wilson's private label candy bars for organizations and business along the 8-state Route 66 corridor proves that good ideas triumph even in a falling economy.
Chocolatier Marcia Wilson started with online sales of her chocolates on EBay after family and friends urged her to sell her chocolates and fudge that she made from her mother's and grandmother's recipes. Sales were brisk, and she added some corporate clients for her homemade fudge.
After that success, she took the plunge and opened a storefront Route 66 Fudge Shop on Route 66 in Cuba, MO in a building where her parents had once operated a store in the 1970s. She opened before Christmas in 2007, and customers stood in line waiting for her sweet treats during Christmas and Valentine rushes.
Online sales multiplied as more and more Rt. 66 travelers sampled her chocolates as they traveled the road, and locals supported her efforts. Over 700 custom candy molds allow her to fill requests for custom chocolates, whether it is a giant chocolate tooth for a dentist or a horse-themed chocolate for an equine enthusiast.
"I love the challenge of making perfect, decadent candy that tastes great and looks beautiful too. I feel this allows me to use my talents because it is creative, challenging, and quite rewarding. I am always looking for a new candy challenge," Wilson remarked in the early days of her store's opening.
One of her early goals was to introduce a Route 66 candy bar. In March 2008, she launched an entire line of Route 66 bars in 12 flavors, which can be purchased individually or in a gift box. The bars bear a slogan such as "Turnpike Toffee" or "Main Street Mint" to express the flavor of both the candy bar and the road. She added an 8-state Mother Road Bar in the fall.
Cuba, because of its 12 outdoor murals, is designated as "Route 66 Mural City" by the Missouri legislature. The murals were commissioned by Viva Cuba, a community beautification group. In the process of discussing the Route 66 candy bars with a Viva Cuba member, it was suggested that Cuba should have its own candy bar, so the group designed a wrapper that incorporated a mural and Viva Cuba's "Cuba Route 66 Mural City" logo. Now, Cuba not only had its murals but its own candy bar as well. This bar led to other "personalized" private label bars.
The culture of Route 66 is alive and well in Cuba, and businesses emphasize their connection to the Mother Road. In 2008, Fanning Outpost opened four miles west of Cuba and erected a 42 foot steel rocking chair on April 1 in the spirit of old Route 66 attractions. The Outpost and the "World's Largest Route 66 Rocking Chair" seemed a natural for its own candy bar. With its customized wrapper featuring the rocker, swift sales for the souvenir bar followed.
Then the town's museum and the nearby Route 66 Mule Trading Post adopted private label bars. Each business has its own flavor, and some businesses order100 bars at a time. Once other businesses and organizations saw the custom bars, they often sold themselves. Wilson also promotes her bars by sending a sample and an introductory letter to other Route 66 attractions throughout the Rt. 66 states, and accounts continue to grow. Along Route 66, The Gay Parita has added its own bar, and Pop's of Oklahoma is now a customer.
Wilson suffered a personal setback with back problems that required her to give up her storefront, but she still works, creates, and designs chocolates from a home-based business. Her chocolate concoctions and Route 66 Bars are available at Java.net Books and Gifts Coffee Shop.
With her niche market, Wilson is creating more private label candy bars that spread the word of attractions and businesses "Where the Sweets Hit the Streets on Route 66," while her signature Route 66 bars provide a sweet souvenir of the road.
